Here's a photo array of the AFL splicers

Here are some of the Alcoa Fujikura, Ltd. fusion splicers that we work with. These photographs were taken at a recent fiber optic training course. Note that the FSM-30S has been replaced by the FSM-40S, a more compact portable splicer with battery operation capability. The FSM-30R or ribbon fusion splicer is the latest in this line of splicer.

Here is the FSM-30S with the various kit components. The cleaver supplied in the kit is shown next to the splicer.FSM-30SNotice that the other tools such as the fiber coating strippers, jacket cutter, Kevlar shears, alcohol dispenser, and kim wipes are additional accessories that Exsell can provide.
Here is the FSM-30R, Ribbon Fusion Splicer that splices multiple fibers, up to 12, simultaneously. The box of kim wipes and the alcohol dispenser come from Exsell.FSM-30RThe kit includes the hot jacket stripper, cleaver, splice protection hot melt sleeves, tweezers, and fiber holders for 12 fiber splicing. Notice the tool at the left front of the splicer. It is a fiber splitting tool from Siecor. It can split a 24 fiber ribbon into two 12 fiber ribbons that can be spliced in the 30R.
Here is a close in picture showing 12 fibers as they are aligning in the 30R splicer. One can see the fibers clearly and visually check the end face cleave angles.FMS-30R Fiber DisplayThis is the first step in the splicing process. From here the splicer checks alignment and gap distances. It will generate an error message if the fibers are out of alignment.
In this photo, the various parameters measured by the splicer are displayed. That is, gap, cleave angles and fiber to fiber offset. The operator can make a determination from these numbers as to whether the splice will be successful or not and for which fibers.FMS-30R Alignment DisplayThe 30R is a tremendous time saver when dealing with high fiber count cables in long distance service provisioning applications.
